Deer are not the only game opening Nov. 7. Texas fall wild turkey season begins that day, and 2026 comes with tighter rules: unbearded hens cannot be harvested, and every turkey must be reported within 24 hours. Lee, Lee & Puckitt (LLP Ranchland), a San Angelo-based ranch Broker, reviewed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department rules so landowners and lease holders know what to tell hunters before they reach the gate.
Fall Turkey Season Dates
Archery-only season runs Oct. 3 through Nov. 6, and the youth-only weekend was Oct. 30 through Nov. 1. The general fall season opens Nov. 7, 2026. In the North Zone it runs through Jan. 3, 2027, and in the South Zone through Jan. 17. Brooks, Kenedy, Kleberg and Willacy counties run through Feb. 28, 2027. TPWD says 175 of Texas’s 254 counties have turkey seasons, and an Upland Game Bird Endorsement is required.
What Changed for 2026-27
TPWD’s list of regulation changes includes a statewide ban on harvesting unbearded hens, and Matagorda and Wharton counties are now closed to turkey hunting. When the commission approved the changes in April, it cited an overall decline in wild turkey populations across Texas. Bag composition is limited to gobblers and bearded hens, and county listings show an annual limit of four turkeys across all counties, with only one from the East Zone.
Tagging, Reporting and Proof of Sex
Every turkey must be tagged immediately, and TPWD now requires harvest reporting within 24 hours in all counties, through the Texas Hunt & Fish app or online. TPWD also launched a Turkey Harvest App that shows county-scale harvest from the mandatory reports.
Proof of sex must stay with the bird until it reaches the processor’s home or a cold storage or processing facility and is processed. For a gobbler, that is a leg with the spur, or a patch of skin with breast feathers and the beard. For a bearded hen, it is the skin patch with feathers and beard.
Landowner Takeaways
It is unlawful to hunt roosting turkeys, so make that clear in lease paperwork and at the camp. Spell out whether guests may hunt turkey at all, who files the harvest report and where birds may be cleaned. Wildlife on a place is part of its story, and well-kept habitat and clear lease terms help a ranch hold its appeal to buyers, though no study here ties turkey numbers to price per acre.
