Saturday, Nov. 7, opens the general whitetail season across Mason County, and for one group of young hunters the weekend is about far more than a deer. Operation Orphans, based at Camp Gene Ashby on the Llano River, is in its 66th season of pairing kids with volunteer guides and host ranches around Mason. Lee, Lee & Puckitt (LLP Ranchland), the San Angelo-based ranch Broker that serves Mason County, put together the dates, limits and practical notes landowners need this fall.
Season Dates for Mason County
Texas Parks and Wildlife lists these 2026 to 2027 white-tailed deer dates for Mason County:
- Archery only: Oct. 3 through Nov. 6
- Early youth season: Oct. 30 through Nov. 1
- General season: Nov. 7 through Jan. 3, 2027
- Late youth season: Jan. 4 through 17, 2027
- Special late season: Jan. 4 through 17, 2027, restricted to antlerless and unbranched antlered deer
The bag limit is five deer, with no more than two bucks. Ranches enrolled in the Managed Lands Deer Program follow the harvest rules and tags issued for that property, so managers should confirm their numbers before the opener.
A Youth Hunt Tradition That Depends on Landowners
According to the Mason County Chamber of Commerce listing for the program, Operation Orphans hosts hunts this season on Oct. 31 for girls and on Nov. 14, Dec. 12 and Jan. 9 for boys. Young hunters base out of Camp Gene Ashby and go out with trained guides who have passed background checks and a hunter safety course.
The program works because area families open their gates. Kids mainly take does, and some also harvest spikes or management bucks at the landowner’s discretion. That arrangement can fit neatly into a ranch’s own harvest plan, especially on places trying to balance buck and doe numbers. Landowners decide how involved they want to be, from simply allowing access to guiding a hunt themselves.
For a ranch family, the benefits go beyond a full freezer for a camp. A well run youth hunt builds the next generation of hunters who will one day buy, lease and care for Hill Country land.
Habitat Going Into the Opener
Mason County went into deer season after a wet start to October. LCRA gauges recorded 3.75 to 7.64 inches across Kimble and Mason counties in the storms of Oct. 1 and 2, as reported by DailyTrib. That rain greened up forbs and winter weeds, which can scatter deer and make feeder patterns less reliable early in the season.
Fire danger has eased as well. Texas A&M Forest Service records show Mason County’s burn ban, enacted Aug. 19, was lifted Oct. 3. Hunters should still use care with campfires, vehicles in tall grass and any welding around blinds or feeders.
Public Draw Hunts Nearby
Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area, run by TPWD near Mason, offers drawn hunts through the agency’s public hunting program. Those hunts are a reminder of the demand for quality Hill Country deer habitat, the same demand that supports lease income and recreational land values on private ranches in the county.
Notes for Mason County Landowners
- Write down your harvest goals. Share them with guests, lessees and any youth hunt guides so everyone knows what to shoot.
- Check liability coverage. Talk with your insurer about guests and hunters before the opener.
- Track your records. Harvest data, trail camera notes and habitat work all help when you lease, sell or appraise a hunting ranch.
- Watch for screwworm. Report any suspicious wounds in livestock or deer to the Texas Animal Health Commission.
