Mid-October in Throckmorton County means sale days at R.A. Brown Ranch, and this year marked the 52nd edition of its annual bull, female and Quarter Horse sale. Two weeks later, Throckmorton County Memorial Hospital appeared on the state’s list for a $2.51 million rural health grant, news that matters to every family living miles from the nearest larger town. Lee, Lee & Puckitt (LLP Ranchland), a San Angelo-based ranch Broker serving Throckmorton County, looked at what these local stories say about the cattle business and rural life in this part of the Rolling Plains.
A Seven-Generation Sale
The R.A. Brown Ranch traces its roots to 1895 and is now in its seventh generation, according to the ranch. Its October sale ran over two days, Oct. 13 and 14. Tuesday evening featured registered Angus females at 5 p.m. and Quarter Horses at 6 p.m., followed by the main bull and female sale Wednesday at 10 a.m., with online bidding offered through DVAuction. The offering included Angus, Red Angus and SimAngus genetics.
Sale averages were not published in the sources we reviewed. The bigger point is that a long-running seedstock program keeps drawing buyers to Throckmorton County every fall, which supports local businesses and the county’s cattle reputation.
Why Bull Buying Matters This Year
With the national cattle herd at a low ebb, many operations are deciding whether to hold heifers back and rebuild. A bull purchase is one of the longest-lasting decisions a cow-calf operation makes, since a good herd sire shapes calf crops and replacement females for years.
For landowners who lease out grass, rebuilding herds usually means steady demand for well-watered, well-fenced pasture.
Hospital Grant Strengthens Rural Health Care
KAUZ reported Oct. 27 that Throckmorton County Memorial Hospital is slated for $2.51 million through the state’s Rural Texas Strong grant program. The Texas Dispatch noted that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission describes these as intent to award decisions, and that no money moves until a contract is signed.
For ranch families, a local hospital is not a luxury. Working cattle, horses and equipment carry real risk, and minutes count after an accident far from town. Local health care is also something buyers ask about before moving to a rural county.
Dry Conditions and the Burn Ban
Throckmorton County has been under a burn ban for an unusually long stretch. Texas A&M Forest Service data compiled by BurnBanTexas shows the current order in effect since April 12, 2021. Most neighboring counties were also under bans as of Nov. 4, with Haskell an exception. Late October rain helped parts of the Rolling Plains, but cured grass and wind still make fire a risk, especially as hunters arrive.
Deer Season Opens Saturday
Throckmorton County is in TPWD’s North Zone. The general whitetail season runs Nov. 7, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, with a late youth and special late season Jan. 4 through 17. The limit is five deer, no more than two bucks. Many ranches here pair cattle with hunting leases.
The Land Market in Throckmorton County
Throckmorton County falls within the West Texas region of the Texas Real Estate Research Center, which averaged a record $3,008 an acre in the second quarter of 2026. That was up 14.29 percent from a year earlier, with 533 sales and a typical tract of 409 acres. Statewide, the center described the market as flat over the quarter, with buyers more cautious than in recent years.
Here, grazing ranches with good water, sound fences and quality deer habitat draw the widest buyer pool. Sellers who price from recent nearby sales, not older peaks, tend to do best.
