Jones County took the burn ban off the table in late October, but the pastures around Anson are still dealing with a serious dry spell as North Zone deer season opens. Lee, Lee & Puckitt (LLP Ranchland) is a San Angelo-based ranch Broker serving Jones County, and we put the burn status, drought readings and regional land numbers in one place for landowners watching both fire risk and feed.
Burn Ban Lifted, TCEQ Rules Still Apply
The Jones County website carried a banner stating the burn ban was lifted Oct. 26, 2026. BurnBanTexas, using Texas A&M Forest Service data updated Nov. 7 at 5:00 AM CST, showed no burn ban for Jones County. Neighboring Shackelford and Taylor counties still had bans that morning. Outdoor burning without a county ban still has to follow Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules, so a clean county list does not mean every pile is fair game.
Drought Still Sitting Heavy on Jones County
Drought maps built from the U.S. Drought Monitor and summarized by Cownty as of Nov. 3, 2026, placed Jones County in D2 Severe drought, with Livestock Forage Disaster Program coverage noted for three months in 2026. Foundation Soils, another Drought Monitor aggregator with data dated Nov. 3, showed 100 percent of the county in drought of D1 or worse and about 60.8 percent in D2 severe or worse. Drought.gov county rankings for Jones listed September 2026 among the driest Septembers on a long record and year-to-date precipitation well below normal through September. Those figures describe a county that has had some relief from fire restrictions without yet getting the deep moisture it needs.
Deer Season Dates Around Anson
Jones County is in TPWD’s North Zone. Archery ended Nov. 6. General white-tailed season runs Nov. 7, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, with a bag of five deer, no more than two bucks. The Jones County Outdoor Annual page does not list the antler-restriction block that some neighboring Hill Country counties carry. Fall turkey in the North Zone runs Nov. 7 through Jan. 3, 2027. Quail season is statewide Nov. 1 through Feb. 28. No mule deer season is listed for Jones County.
What West Texas Land Data Shows
Texas A&M’s Texas Real Estate Research Center places Jones County in its West Texas region. In second quarter 2026 that region averaged $3,008 an acre, up 14.29 percent from a year earlier and a regional record, with 533 sales, a typical tract of 409 acres and $229.26 million in dollar volume. Those are regional figures, not a price tag on any Anson-area ranch. Drought stress, water wells and grass condition still weigh heavily on what a buyer will offer.
